dirty-maryI find it hilarious but kinda cool that Mayor Bloomberg has issued an official proclamation that today, October 5th, is “Bloody Mary Day” in New York.  To kick off the 75th anniversary of the beloved cocktail, Bloomberg and Starwood CEO Fritz Van Paasschen, will be ringing the closing bell of the NYSE in a few hours.

If you didn’t already know it (and why would you?), the Bloody Mary drink was created in 1934 by a bartender at the King Cole Bar in the St. Regis New York (it was originally called the “Red Snapper” but the name didn’t catch  on).

To honor this milestone, St.Regis properties worldwide are creating new offerings, such as:

  • The St. Regis NYC (my favorite place because I got married there!) and Washington DC have partnered with a host of chefs and restaurants (such as The Spotted Pig, Dovetail, Landmarc, and Blue Smoke) to lend their own personal Bloody Mary recipes to be included on special anniversary menus at the King Cole Bar and The Bar, respectively.
  • A special Bloody Mary spa treatment at St. Regis Bali (Vodka Tomato Clay Wrap…yuck!)
  • A special Bloody Mary menu at The St. Regis in Rome including something like vodka infused ricotta cheese served over tomato fondue (ehhh…)
  • Unique takes on the Bloody Mary at 18 of the St. Regis regional properties (examples include Aspen’s “Sunset Snapper” , Bora’s “Bora Mary” or Beijing’s “Great Wall”. ) 


All this Bloody Mary talk is making me thirsty for…a diet coke.

A good excuse in any case to get your tush to the King Cole Bar (any old bar will do though) order your “Bloody Mary” and raise your glass to pay homage to this momentous occasion!
