Our next culinary post takes us to gorgeous island of Capri, home of The Blue Grotto, for a week-long package of Mediterreanan cooking and island touring. To be more specific, we are going to Anacapri, a village set on limestone cliffs 1,900 feet above Capri. The setting is equally spectacular with wrap -around views of the Bay of Naples amidst glorious olive and lemon trees and grapevines.
I learned about Cooking-Vacations (a U.S. based company based in Positano), who is the operator of this as well as many other culinary programs in Italy, while researching family culinary programs and wrote about their Secret Garden in Positano package.
What I love best about this 5-day, 4-night package (aside from the location, of course) is the balance between structure (cooking classes, dinners and tours) and free time to go off on your own to explore the island as you wish. Of course, the highlight of this package is the meal preparation and eating! By the end of the week, you will be an expert on how to make traditional Caprese recipes featuring local fish, antipasto, pasta, brick oven pizza and desserts (all the vegetables and fruits are picked from her garden) as well as secret recipes such as limoncello, torta di Capri, Caprese cake, pesce al limone, and ravioli capresi.
During the week, you will tour the island with a private driver in the island’s famous canopy-covered convertibles discovering secret addresses, indulging in a Chef’s tasting dinner at a local ristorante, sailing around the island in a private boat tour (with a visit to the Grotta Azzurra) and going on a gourmet tour tasting local cheeses, pastas, sausages and chocolates. Each day provides time for you to lunch on your own in town at any of the excellent trattorias. Definitely a food fest! You can burn off those calories hiking through the alleyways and cliffs of Anacapri.
You have the choice to stay at a 4-star hotel, just 5 minutes off the Piazza Umberto, in spacious bedrooms with their own balconies overlooking Capri (breakfast included) or at Maria’s (your private chef for the week) bed & breakast. Prices for the week: $1,895 (B&B option) or $2,695 per person based on double occupancy and include accommodation, 3 cooking classes followed by dinner, tours (boat, gourmet and island tour) and Chef’s Tasting Dinner.
